Reflexology
Page contents
1. How can it help in Parkinson's?
2. What should I expect at an appointment?
Reflexology is based on the principle that the anatomy of the body is reflected in miniature in reflex zones on the feet, hands and ears. A reflexologist will apply specific pressure to the reflex zone which matches the area of the body the therapy aims to treat. This pressure will then trigger the body’s healing process in the corresponding area of the body. Although a reflexologist works only on a small area of the body, the treatment works in a far wider way.
Reflexologists believe that the body is divided into ten energy zones running the entire length of the body, and that these may become blocked by congestion, disease or disorder. The trained hands of a reflexologist can detect tiny deposits of crystals and imbalances in the body, and by working the reflex points on patient’s feet, hands or ears they can release blockages and restore the free flow of energy (Chi) to prompt healing.
How can it help in Parkinson's?
There is very limited scientific evidence into the benefits of reflexology in Parkinson’s and more research is needed in order to draw reliable conclusions. The effects are unique to each person but many believe it promotes relaxation, improves circulation, stimulates vital organs and encourages the body’s natural healing processes. It may also speed up the elimination of harmful toxins from the body, as well as boosting the production of natural chemicals in the brain.
Reflexology can be helpful when used to support traditional Parkinson’s treatments. For example, it can stimulate the saliva glands and tear ducts which are often suppressed as a result of Parkinson’s medications, and can also help to relieve constipation.
This therapy may be unsuitable if you have certain medical conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, thyroid problems, a blood disorder, foot problems or you are in the first trimester of pregnancy. You should always discuss this with your doctor or other healthcare professional before starting any treatment.
What should I expect at an appointment?
Reflexology is not regulated in many. It is therefore a good idea to ask your doctor or other healthcare professional for recommendations. Friends, family, other people with Parkinson’s or your national Parkinson’s association may also be able to advise based on personal experience.
It is advisable to see a therapist who has experience of Parkinson’s so do ask about their experience of the condition as well as their qualifications.
The initial consultation will last roughly an hour as the therapist must first take your medical history. You would then receive a treatment of around 40 minutes as the therapist works on the energy lines and reflex zones that pass through your feet. Subsequent consultations may last around 45 minutes. The length of the course of treatment will depend on your individual needs.
Sometimes there is a dramatic reaction to a first treatment such as increased bowel movements, cold-like symptoms or skin problems. This usually indicates that the treatment is working but you should discuss any concerns you have with your reflexologist or doctor.
Only footwear needs to be removed. Treatment is usually given on a special reclining couch.

What is a DETOX?
A Detox can come in many forms from hi-tech to natural, vitamin enriched to the downright scary .All of these however have the same ultimate goals of achieving a healthier body, mind and soul as well as to cleanse the body of both self induced toxins and those of which we have no control over. Everything that is taken into the body has its effect in one way or another, some good but on the other hand some bad .The accumulation of these over a period of time can damage your health severely and inevitably impinge on your quality of life whether in the short or long term .It is these negative elements which a detox aims to expel or at least reduce. People more and more value their quality of life above all else and thus are beginning to pay attention to their health. Here is where the detox has become very fashionable as it does not mean you have to give up the pleasures you have become accustomed to but rather refrain or reduce consumption over a period from a few days to a couple of weeks .Not too much to ask even from the most ardent party and social animal.
When should I do a Detox?
When considering a detox always think of the timing of it. In other words do not undertake a detox during times of great stress, upheaval or change as you are unlikely to be able to stick to your plans despite your best intentions. Think about the form of detox you intend to undergo and bear in mind your limitations. It is better to start at a very basic level and choose elements you know you should be able to adhere to at a later date you can build up your program for a future detox. There is no point aiming too high for a first attempt only to realise shortly into it that you simply can’t stick to the principles of the detox. Avoid harsh detox programs as they will be very hard to stick to and can have some very uncomfortable side effects such as headaches, which may put you off continuing. Some of the other negative effects you may experience are spots, acne, bad breath or tiredness. Don’t let these dishearten you though as they are generally mild and temporary and are simply the results of the toxins being expelled from the body. Afterwards you will feel much improved and happy that you had the conviction to undertake your detox. Try to avoid or at very least reduce your intake of tea and coffee. Alcohol and Nicotine should be avoided as much as possible. Foods high in sugar content, heavy starch foods and dairy products should be minimised. All of these elements impede the good work you are trying to do in your detox and slow the body’s functions down allowing toxin build up to continue. Remember to take a detox suitable to your lifestyle, at an appropriate time and bear with it.
What are the benefits of a Detox?
The benefits of a detox can be vast and numerous .It is all dependent on your willpower, attitude and determination to succeed .The more effort you put into your detox the more results and well-being you will achieve and see for yourself giving you the confidence to repeat a detox in the future .The best part is that you not only see the visible results but you also feel the improvements inwardly in body, mind and soul. Depending on the level and content you go for some of the results you will find are a better look and texture to your skin. Hair, nails and teeth will benefit similarly .You will find your sleep pattern improves resulting in energy levels increasing. This in turn reduces stress levels and improves mental agility, your thought process, concentration and your emotions, leaving you happier, more content and better prepared to deal with the world around you .I refrain from using the term “Harsh World” as our world is only as harsh or as smooth as we make it and by detoxing your system every once in a while you can improve your world for yourself. Finally and most importantly is that you will also be reinforcing your immune system, balancing all your internal systems from lymph drainage, respiration, kidneys, cardio vascular system to aiding digestion .All of this leaves you healthier and less susceptible to illness, disease and infection .Not to mention the fact that a detox can also help you loose some of that unwanted weight and help tone up muscle. Giving you a healthier and leaner body to feel confident about.

Alzheimer’s Tea Day is finally back!
After two long years, The Alzheimer Society of Ireland is inviting everyone to come together again for a cup of tea, a chat and maybe a treat or two on Thursday, May 5th!
Join Dáithí Ó Sé and Sinead Kennedy and host your own Tea Day gathering as the nation comes together for the most important cup of tea of the year to help people living with dementia.
We’ve waited a long time for this cuppa.
Dementia is the name for a range of conditions that cause damage to the brain. This damage can affect memory, thinking, language and the ability to carry out everyday tasks. There are many conditions which cause dementia. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause. Vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and Frontotemporal dementia are other causes.
Sometimes a person may experience a mix of two types of dementia and this is called mixed dementia. Some people may be diagnosed with dementia and it may not be possible to confirm if it is Alzheimer’s or another cause of dementia.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common and well-known cause of dementia. It is thought to cause over half of all cases. It is recognised by the build-up of protein in the brain which forms plaques and tangles that stop the brain working as it should.
Short term memory loss is often one of the first symptoms of this disease; however there are a range of early signs and symptoms including
Getting stuck for words;
Misplacing things regularly;
Losing track of time;
Changes in mood and behaviour and;
Difficulty in finding the way, even in familiar places.
It is important to remember that symptoms vary from person to person as everyone’s experience with the disease is unique.
